A 29-year-old man is dead after a convicted felon with an extensive criminal record allegedly stabbed him in the neck in broad daylight Sunday afternoon on Atlanta’s busy Beltline trail near a Kroger grocery store.

Atlanta Police say 54-year-old Jonathan Hamby, a convicted felon with 30 previous arrest cycles, was on active probation for an aggravated assault case out of Brookhaven when the attack occurred.

Officers arrested him on the scene shortly after the incident.

Witness accounts indicate the dispute may have involved Hamby accusing others of trying to take his belongings, though police have not confirmed that any theft occurred.

According to Atlanta Police Chief Darin Schierbaum, the incident began as a verbal argument that escalated. Hamby, who investigators say did not know the victim, allegedly pulled a knife and stabbed the 29-year-old man.

Witnesses reported seeing Hamby with a knife in each hand during the altercation, according to WSBTV.

Schierbaum did not mince words about the suspect’s history.

“We’re currently showing 30 previous arrest cycles,” the chief said. “We’re showing that he is a convicted felon, and we’re showing that he was on active probation for an aggravated assault that occurred in Brookhaven.”

Court records detailed by Atlanta News First show Hamby pleaded guilty in 2024 to carrying a weapon within a school safety zone. He received a 10-year sentence with two years to serve in custody and the remaining eight on probation.

Records further indicate he failed to complete required anger management classes and a mental health evaluation in 2025. Police have not ruled out whether mental health issues played a role in Sunday’s killing, according to Atlanta News First.

According to Fox News, “Some of Hamby’s previous arrests included charges for battery, aggravated assault, possession of a knife during the commission of a felony, obstruction of law enforcement, and criminal trespass, according to Fulton County Jail records. His arrest history also shows a history of mental health issues.”

Chief Schierbaum openly questioned how someone with this record was walking free and armed on a popular public trail.

“Was he an individual that should be in this space, armed with a weapon, and that carried it out?” Schierbaum asked. He noted the ongoing problem of recidivism in Fulton County and the existence of a repeat offender commission that meets quarterly precisely because of cases like this.
