The ordeal involving Nico Iamaleava and Tennessee shed a spotlight on the NCAA transfer portal. The QB essentially hanging his program to dry became a mainstream affair that spawned widespread discourse. Certainly more widespread than anything involving the portal had been since its advent. By extension, the more casual fan realized how broken the system really is. How the portal facilitates disloyalty and scandalous affairs. However, the transfer portal isn’t all bad. Conceded, it often gets abused as players jump ship at the slightest of inconveniences. But the portal also allows for a re-do, a clean slate. A second chance if you may. Well, 94 student-athletes have just brought their hopes for a second chance to the portal after some grave adversity hit their program.

Picture being uprooted from your house abruptly. Not because you failed to pay rent, didn’t comply to the rules. The house simply ceased to exist. Dissipating into thin air, leaving you and your baggage looking for a new shelter. 94 players, the entire roster strength of this D-2 program, experienced this. Their program, heck their entire university, is being shut down. This hoard has hit the portal as perhaps the only resort out of a messy situation. That sure helps clear some of the negativity surrounding the transfer portal, eh?

This matter stems from Gaffney, South Carolina. While other, more prominent schools in the south continue to thrive off athletics, that didn’t quite transpire at Limestone University. A Christian liberal arts school, Limestone has existed for 179 years. This isn’t one of those cases where a philanthropist with deep pockets tries to do good by the community and fails. There’s a rich lineage and history associated with the school. A strong foundation, you’d think. Begrudgingly, that wasn’t quite a case.

Limestone University is reportedly under a debt of $30 million. Unless they can conjure an emergency infusion of $6 million by April 22nd, operations will be disbanded and the 50-acre campus be sold. The university contributes about $150 million to Cherokee County’s economy. If it ceases to exist, the community will be hit really hard. This development is much bigger than football. But that doesn’t minimize the peril of this faction of 94. But at least they can take their talents elsewhere via the transfer portal. There’s no transfer portal for coaches and members of staff.

The football program’s head coach, Jerrico Cotchery, took to X and relayed some very profound sentiments. “Words can’t express how heartbroken I am for my staff and players after hearing Limestone University is shutting down,” he wrote. “They have poured everything into making this a respected program across the country! You won’t find a better group of people. It was a joy working with them every single day! We had an incredible staff, roster, and 2025 signing class! If you need a reference on any of them feel free to reach out. Thank you to EVERYONE, especially the families, who supported us over the past three seasons! I love you all and will forever be grateful! Romans 8:28,”  Cotchery is now left unemployed, as are his subordinates. The gravity of this predicament becomes even gut-wrenching when you zoom out and take in a holistic view of Limestone University.
