Medical dramas are one of those genres you put on for the intensity. There's nothing quite like those fast-paced, urgent scenes when a patient comes in with a gunshot wound, an impalement, or some weird, unexplained symptoms. It's all fiction, of course, but the idea that this is what a real hospital sometimes looks like, maybe always looks like, raises the stakes.
