The classics suffer a strange fate. They have become so celebrated for their literary achievements that people seem to forget what actually happens in them. Ulysses becomes shorthand for an impossibly difficult book. Middlemarch sounds like 900 pages of homework. And Don Quixote gets reduced to an old man attacking windmills. It's an awfully reductive way to treat books that have spent centuries outliving their contemporaries.
