The ’90s R-rated movie boom had a very specific kind of badness hiding inside it. Studios kept chasing danger, sex, murder, scandal, adult glamour, courtroom heat, tabloid psychology, and cable-after-midnight energy, then forgot the part where the movie still had to be thrilling, funny, sexy, or even basically awake. And the best part is, several things that are considered offensive now weren’t offensive back then so you could basically go wild with an r-rated film. A hard sprinkle of sex or some specific jokes and you were good to go.
