I get why people want to be excited. The Mandalorian and Grogu is the first theatrical Star Wars movie since The Rise of Skywalker, it is being sold as a big-screen event, it is built around the franchise’s most commercially bulletproof duo, and Lucasfilm is openly positioning it as an all-new adventure that can play for longtime fans and newcomers on May 22, 2026, including in IMAX. Jon Favreau has also said he wrote the movie to work for audiences who have not been living inside the Disney+ continuity. That is the optimistic case.
