I have a weakness for characters who believe they're smarter than the trouble they've walked into. The confidence is usually magnificent. They've calculated everything, prepared their excuses, and identified precisely how much they're willing to compromise. Then somebody asks an unexpected question, their expression changes ever so slightly, and you realize you're about to watch an entire life fall apart. I absolutely love that moment.
