There is a very specific pleasure in watching Kate Winslet refuse to protect a character from herself. She will let a woman be vain, cruel, embarrassingly romantic, frightened, bored with her own life, sexually reckless, emotionally unfair, or completely convinced that the terrible decision she is making is actually the brave one. That is rarer than it sounds. Movie stars are usually asked to keep one hand on the audience’s affection. Winslet has spent most of her career taking both hands off.
