Newspaper comics have been a staple of the medium since before Superman put on his cape and Captain America picked up his shield. Without the likes of Mutt and Jeff, Dixie Dugan, and many more, the comic book would not exist. Literally. The first "modern" comic book, The Funnies, was little more than a reprint of newspaper strips, launching an entire industry that has continued to evolve through good times and bad.
