Filmmaker Carl Erik Rinsch has been sentenced to 30 months in prison for defrauding Netflix out of $11 million, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Rinsch was arrested in West Hollywood in March last year and subsequently was indicted, with a Manhattan jury finding him guilty of wire fraud, money laundering and multiple counts of illegal monetary transactions.

Rinsch had reportedly spent funds earmarked for a sci-fi series titled “White Horse” on risky securities trades, legal fees and purchasing luxury goods.

Rinsch never finished the series, instead suing Netflix for more than $14 million in additional funds he said he was contractually obligated to. An arbitrator reportedly ruled against the director last year.

Rinsch faced a maximum term of 90 years, with federal prosecutors recommending a 60-month prison sentence. U.S. District Judge Jed Rakoff issued a sentence on the lower end after evidence of an untreated mental health condition emerged.

On top of the prison term, Rinsch was sentenced to three years of supervised release and ordered to pay Netflix $11 million in restitution, including more than $4.4 million in legal fees incurred across the litigation.
