Second-round auditions for the next James Bond are set for August, with several high-profile actors rumoured to be in the running. However, the woman who spent 40 years casting 007 has already ruled out the current favourites.
Why Debbie McWilliams wants a lesser-known actor as the next James Bond
Debbie McWilliams spent 40 years casting Bond films, from For Your Eyes Only through No Time to Die. She handed Timothy Dalton, Pierce Brosnan, and Daniel Craig their licences to kill. Now retired, she views the current frontrunners with something close to exasperation. “I don’t want to see any of them as James Bond.”
Her objection has nothing to do with the talent of Turner, Dickinson, or Elordi. The problem lies elsewhere. “It is absolutely essential that he retains a total enigma,” McWilliams explained to The Independent. “We want to know as little about them personally as possible, because that’s what spies are.”
This rules out actors who come with too much cultural baggage. Jacob Elordi broke through on Euphoria and has since been featured in one hit after another. Callum Turner’s marriage to Dua Lipa generates constant tabloid coverage. Harris Dickinson’s rising profile brings attention.
For McWilliams, this level of visibility damages the mystique James Bond requires. “He’s licensed to kill, and we have to believe that he can do that. If you don’t, then you’ve lost the audience.”
The franchise has always benefited from relative unknowns stepping into the James Bond role. Dalton and Brosnan weren’t household names when they signed on. Craig had built a respected career in independent films but remained far from the A-list.
“He wasn’t a household name, and that helps enormously,” McWilliams noted. Her preference for the next Bond lands squarely on “somebody who is completely out of the blue.” When pressed for her own shortlist, McWilliams offered nothing.
