There’s no such thing as a completely objective ranked list, so I bypassed the scientific approach altogether and asked myself a simpler question: what books have stayed with me? I’ve read every book on this list and chose them because I still can’t stop thinking about them. I'm not alone in finding these works to be transformative: all but two of the books below have been adapted for television or the stage.
