Fantasy entered the 1980s still living under the enormous shadow of Lord of the Rings. Tolkien's influence had helped transform the genre into a publishing force, but it had also inspired countless novels built from increasingly familiar ingredients: quests, prophecies, magical artifacts, medieval kingdoms, and battles between clearly defined forces of good and evil.
